Digital Learning encompasses many facets of the learning process from learning experience to the assessment of learning. Here are the different aspects of Digital Learning:
- Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
- Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
- Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
- Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
Personalized Learning with Digital TextbooksThis is an area that is growing in popularity due to the cost of published textbooks. There are many options available from purchasing digital textbooks to creating your own with open source content. This year, Wayland has signed on to be a #GoOpen district, which means that we are going to work to create open source textbooks that can be shared and used by other schools. Below are links and resources regarding Digital Textbooks. Michigan has started it's own Michigan Open Book Project with Social Studies books that are currently available. There are even endless resources available on iTunes U (iPad only). A few organizations that offer open source books are ck12.org and OpenStax. Students can create their own digital book with the Book Creator Free App. In addition, I have added a link to an iBooks Starter Kit that is a great resource if working with iBooks Author (creating your own digital book).
Michigan has it's own OER repository for quality resources! Check out goopenmichigan.org to search for lessons, activities, textbooks, etc. that are quality OER. If you are not sure of where to start with OER, go to the website and find the #GoOpen Toolkit (upper left) to help you get started. To the right is a short video about goopenmichigan.org =>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I have even included a link to an iBook that I was part of creating using Apple's iBook Author, Apple Best Practices TRIG Grant 2015-2016. The book will open in Books (you will need to download the book). It shares our district's work with Apple during the 2015-16 school year. Please let me know if you have questions or want to work on a book for your classroom - wilsonc@waylandunion.org |

Online Learning Resources that can be used for Differentiation
Wayland has purchased district subscriptions to some fantastic online learning tools that can help with differentiation. Check out the button for Online District Subscriptions to find out more. Khan Academy is FREE resource that teachers can use, including SAT prep. Gizmos offer simulations in math and science for Grades 3+ with their Explore Learning accounts. The district also subscribes to Discovery Education which allows for differentiation as well. I have also included a link to the Teacher Standardized Testing Resources which contains many links to various websites that offer great differentiation choices for students in your class. If you have any questions about any of these technology applications, please let Cheryl know at wilsonc@waylandunion.org.
